King Rama V - Series 2 Definitive Stamps - 1 Att on 64 Atts
Issue of July 12th, 1894, to August 26th, 1894
Stamps No.40, No.41 and No.42 These 64 atts stamps were surcharged “1 Atts” or “1 Att” in large roman English typeset and “1 att” in Thai by the Post and Telegraph Department, Bangkok, except Type II Setting C which was done by the Vatcharindr Printing Press. The vertical space between is either 10 mm (rows A, B, D, H and J) or 8.5 mm for other rows. No.40: The English letters spell out “1 Atts.” Type 1 (No.40) can be divided into 3 sub-types based on the settings. 30,000 stamps were printed by subtype. Setting A: The Thai numeral is placed close to the "aa" vowel. Setting B: The Thai numeral is not as close to the "aa" vowel and the English portion varies in length from 13.5 to 17 mm. Setting C: As setting B but the English portion is more uniform varying only from 16 to 17 mm. In both No.41 and No.42, the English letters read “Att.” No.41/42 or Type 2 can be divided into 3 sub-types: Setting A: The Thai numeral averages 1.5 mm. from the "aa” vowel and the length of the Thai portion averages 17 mm. Setting B: The Thai numeral averages .75 mm. from the "aa" vowel and the length of the Thai portion averages 16.5 mm. Setting C: The Thai surcharge is more clearly and lightly printed, and the English portion is 1 mm. longer than in the other settings: In this setting the average length of the Thai portion is 14.5 mm. (No.41) 120,000 stamps of Type 2 were printed. Issue of October 12th, 1894 Stamps No.49 and No.50 The Small Roman surcharges of 1894-1895: The 64 Atts purple and brown stamp was surcharged “1 Att” in English and Thai by the Siam Mercantile Printing Press, Bangkok. These overprints were set up in panes of 60, five horizontal rows of twelve. There were two types of surcharges. Type 1 (No.49) was released 12th October 1894 and issues as 120,000 stamps, while Type 2 (No.50) was issued 29th December 1894 at 500,040 stamps. Identification features can be found in the table. A key difference is that the English surcharge for No.49 is 10 mm in length as opposed to 8.75 mm for No.50. |
